I've spent a lot of time investigating reasons students leave college before graduation and what might be done to help them stay in school. I've found, as surprising as it seems, that only about half of the nearly five million students entering college graduate within four years. Many simply drop out, while others change majors causing them to stay in school longer than they had originally intended. This led one noted educator to write:

Dropping out of college or changing majors is tremendously expensive. Not only do you have to consider

the lost financial investment, you also must also keep in mind the impact on the lives of the students and their

families, the cost to the college or university and financial aid that might have to be repaid.

Research has shown that many students who are successful in a particular college major share many of the same personality traits, interests and talents. This has led to the development of specialized interest inventories which can be used to help students make informed educational and career choices based on the success of other people with similar characteristics. The most powerful of these tools, the Strong Interest Inventory, has been used by tens of thousands of students to help them successfully plan their future.
